Jimmy and the Blue Bottles

Jimmy is a nipper in the lifesaving club where his father was once club champion. The coach wants Jimmy to swim but he doesn’t really want to when in a practice race he is badly stung by bluebottles, a type of jellyfish. But then younger brother Josh is caught in a strong current and there is no one else to save him. When Jimmy overcomes his fear and saves his kid brother he is determined to show what he can do, and enters the race behind the others, now what will happen?

Teaching Points

Develops values:

  • The self, recognising that we are unique human beings capable of spiritual, moral, intellectual and physical growth and development

  • The book encourages children to achieve and be good at what they do where ‘good’ is a commonly shared value of excellence and achievement.

  • relationships as fundamental to the development and fulfilment of ourselves and others, and to the good of the community. We value others for themselves, not only for what they have or what they can do for us

  • society:we value truth, freedom, justice human rights  and the collective effort for the common good.
